Kevin Gaines is the Director of the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies at
the University of Michigan. He is a specialist in U.S. and African American
intellectual and cultural history, race and gender politics in post-World War II
America, and is the author of American Africans in Ghana: Black Expatriates and
the Civil Rights Era (University of North Carolina Press, 2006), and Uplifting the
Race: Black Leadership, Politics, and Culture in the Twentieth Century (North
Carolina Press, 1996).
