演題:Mind Yourself: Soundwalking in the Other's Shoes
Soundwalk's tag-line ('Audio tours for people who don't normally take
audio tours') sums up their objective neatly: the company aims to
offer auditors/walkers the chance -literally- to step outside their
bodily experience of the world. A series of audio files available as
compact discs or mp3 downloads, Sound walk's tours of neighborhoods in
New York City, Paris, and elsewhere have proved immensely popular.
Typically narrated by an "insider," these tours promise to give you
the somatic experience of the perspective (racial, gendered, etc.) of
an other: "get ready to...be Chinese," the narrator of "Chinatown,
NYC" warns us, but is that what actually happens? In this lecture I
consider the question of what a body can/not learn about another by
either walking in, or alongside, that other's footsteps.
