Stephen Berry is associate professor of history at the University of Georgia.
His teaching and writing focus on the Civil War as a lived experience,
particularly how men and women reacted to, were changed by, and endured after,
the conflict shattered their lives. He is the author of All That Makes a Man:
Love and Ambition in the Civil War South (Oxford, 2003) and House of Abraham:
Lincoln & the Todds, A Family Divided by War (Houghton Mifflin, 2007),
and is the editor of Princes of Cotton: Four Diaries of Young Men in the South,
1848-1860 (Georgia, 2007).
